Garments & Grading

This course covers the technical, rather than the artistic and materials side of garment design. It goes into the ways in which the main garment types are constructed, and the critical measurements that you will need for each. It also covers skills that you will need to size and grade a garment pattern accurately, and how to convert your measurements and shaping into a pattern.

It will be of interest to beginner designers who need a grounding in the conventions of garment construction as well as existing designers who want to brush up on their technical knowledge. For tech editors it covers all the theory needed to check garment patterns well, and goes into detail about the process needed for checking garments.

Ideally, you will already be an experienced crocheter who has made a variety of garment types by following a pattern.

The resource materials will be the same whether you are taking the course as a designer or a tech-editor, but the practical assignments will differ according to your focus.

This is made up of 5 course units:

  1. Construction and Critical Measurements
  2. Sizing and Grading
  3. Shaping and Drafting
  4. Garment pattern essentials
  5. Mentoring of either a pattern check (tech-editors) or a pattern draft (designers)

Each unit costs £30 and you can pay using the Stripe payment facility by clicking on the appropriate button below. You will need to create a WordPress account in this process if you don’t already have one. Once I receive your payment receipt I will send you a password to access the course material. You can work at your own pace, although I find it is best for motivation purposes to schedule a date for end of unit feedback! There is no obligation to buy further units. Alternatively you can buy all five units for a discounted price of £135, using the button below. This price includes copies of all presentations and reference material, written feedback on assignments, and a 1-1 video session for feedback at the end of each unit.

1. Construction and Critical Measurements

This unit covers:

  • Garment Types and construction
  • Identifying critical measurements
  • Armholes and Sleeve Caps on set-in-sleeves
  • Visually checking a sample (tech-editors only)
  • Constructing a set-in sleeve (designers only)

2. Sizing and Grading

This unit covers:

  • Using sizing tables
  • Grading and how critical measurements vary
  • The concepts of ease and fit and how to apply them
  • Assessing the grading of a pattern (tech-editors only)
  • Creating grades for a pattern (designers only)

3. Shaping and Drafting

This unit covers:

  • Identifying which critical measurements dictate key areas of shaping
  • Sectioning shaping
  • Recording shaping in a pattern (tech-editors only)
  • Drafting a graded pattern shaping section (designers only)
  • Working with spreadsheets to record (editors) and draft (designers)
  • The garment checking process (tech-editors only)

4. Garment Pattern Essentials

This unit covers:

  • The elements that make up a garment pattern
  • What to include on schematics
  • What to include on a measurements table
  • Calculating yarn quantities
  • Using charts and diagrams (but not instructions on how to create these)

5. Mentoring of a pattern check or draft

This is self-explanatory; if you are a tech-editor you will complete a pattern check assignment, and designers will make a pattern draft. This is intended to consolidate and put into practice the skills and theory learnt during the course.
